Police officers in Eldoret town have arrested two people suspected to have been involved in the stoning of a campaign vehicle of Uasin Gishu gubernatorial candidate Bundotich Zedekiah Buzeki.
Uasin Gishu Deputy County Police Commander Zacchaeus Ng’eno says the two are being interrogated as the police probe the incident.
The incident, police say, was reported outside a popular hotel in Eldoret town on Tuesday night when a car that was carrying Buzeki’s director of elections was pelted with stones.
As a result of the incident, the car’s windscreen was shattered and the driver sustained injuries.
“We are up and running with investigations and so far, two suspects have been arrested,” Ng’eno told journalists at the scene of the incident near Silver Line Hotel.
He also asked members of the public to be politically tolerant, especially ahead of the August 9 general election.
“There is no need or point of damaging other people’s property. If you feel you cannot tolerate what a given politician is talking about, all we are asking is to stay at home,” added the Uasin Gishu Deputy Police boss.
Buzeki recorded a statement at the Central Police station in Eldoret town early on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.
He challenged the security team to ensure the culprits are brought to book.
According to the independent gubernatorial candidate, those involved in the attack are well-known individuals.
“These people who have been hired to create chaos, they are heard speaking loudly and chest-thumping that they have a layer of protection from the police,” Buzeki said.
Buzeki commits to preaching peace
The police boss however insisted that they are out to ensure law and order without fear or favour.
But even as the police probe the incident, Buzeki has committed to continue preaching peace and unity, insisting that it is their competitors out to cause violence for sensing defeat.
“We are going to stand for peace. We will protect and advocate…and I will be the face of unity, the face that will champion the building of a cohesive society in Uasin Gishu, and anything short of that will not be the making of team Buzeki, but others, and specifically our competitors,” he said.
