The County Government of Uasin Gishu has announced plans to upgrade Pioneer Health Centre into a fully-fledged cancer unit.
County officials have described the plan as a significant step toward expanding access to specialized oncology services under the Equity in Cancer Care project.
The county-led initiative, implemented in partnership with Region Östergötland and Linköping University in Sweden, is already yielding results in cancer prevention, screening, and early diagnosis.

Speaking while hosting a Swedish delegation, County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Janet Kurgat said the proposed cancer unit will serve as a regional referral hub, offering advanced diagnostic and treatment services to patients who previously had to travel long distances to access care.
“We are working towards establishing Pioneer as a fully-fledged cancer centre to ensure our residents can access specialized services locally. This is part of our broader strategy to improve early detection and treatment,” said Kurgat.
The project has also recorded a steady rise in the uptake of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, largely driven by an expanded school-based immunization program that has drawn praise from the Swedish partners.
