Enhanced and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education is essential, Uasin Gishu County First Lady Mama Salina Bii has said.
According to Mrs Bii, it equips the youth and adults alike with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
“There is therefore the need to integrate this education into our schools and community programs so that we can dispel myths and combat the stigma often associated with discussing contraception,” she added.
World Contraception Day Commemoration in Eldoret
The County First Lady made the sentiments during the commemoration of World Contraception Day at Cheramei Dispensary.
The day was dedicated to promoting awareness about contraception with the theme being “Contraception Choices: The Power is in My Hands.”
“In our County, the journey towards empowerment begins with education. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every person has access to accurate information about reproductive health and contraception thus we must create an environment where individuals feel safe and supported in seeking the information and services they need,” said Mrs Bii.
We must also confront cultural norms that hinder progress. In many communities, discussions about contraception are often met with resistance, fear, or misunderstanding therefore we must engage community leaders, parents, and influencers in open dialogues to shift these narratives.”
On her part, Clinical Services Chief Officer Dr Joyce Sang noted that empowering men to participate in discussions about reproductive health is equally important because Contraception is not solely a woman’s issue; it requires the involvement and support of partners.
“Access to contraception must be integrated into our primary healthcare system. This means training healthcare providers to deliver non-judgmental and inclusive care that respects the choices of every individual and as we discuss the importance of contraceptive choices.
We must amplify personal stories and every individual has a unique journey with contraception,” added Dr Sang.
