Calls have been made to the citizens to be mindful of their neighbours and assist them with foodstuffs even as major parts of the country continue to face immense drought.
Speaking during a Sunday church service at AIC Fellowship in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim said the country is facing a difficult moment due to climatical changes and the most affected are animals and families.
Governor Bii also called on the church to pray for the country’s leadership even as they set up plans on how to distribute foodstuffs to the hunger-stricken areas.
“We have been attacked by famine and drought and I want the church to pray for the president and the national government. He has already initiated a program of helping people affected by drought in areas like Turkana and the Northern part of Kenya,” the county boss said.

“And as we pray for them, don’t forget you have a neighbour who sleeps without food, who is hungry every day,” he added while reminding faithful of the Biblical verse (Matthew 25:35-40) that narrates how Jesus will disown some of the Christians who will have failed to visit the sick, provide food to the hungry and clothes to the naked.
Drought situation in Kenya
The latest report from the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) notes that early cessation of the 2022 long rains season has worsened the drought situation in 19 of the 23 arid and semi-arid (ASAL) counties.
Further, NDMA says the counties were already bearing the brunt of the poor performance of three previous consecutive failed seasons.
However, six counties – Laikipia, Mandera, Marsabit, Wajir, Isiolo and Samburu have been classified in the Alarm drought phase while thirteen 13 are in the Alert drought phase.
