Court Nullifies Nomination of 11 Uasin Gishu MCAs

11 nominated Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly (MCAs) have lost their jobs.

An Eldoret Magistrate’s Court on March 15, 2023, nullified their nomination following the conclusion of a case in which a section of Civil Societies had challenged the process.

The case was filed before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan and sought nullification of the nomination process conducted by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

UDA was allocated 13 slots for nomination out of the available 14. One went to the Jubilee party.

With the latest ruling, it means only three nominated MCAs have survived the axe with the other 11 hoping to be lucky twice once the UDA party presents a fresh list of individuals to be considered for nomination before IEBC.

In the case, the Civil Society had accused the UDA party of failing to allocate a nomination slot to Persons with Disability.

But a final list gazetted by IEBC had nominations in two categories – marginalized and gender top-up.

The marginalized list had four individuals – James Wachira Maina (marginalized group), Tirop Belinda Chebichi (Ethnic minority), Waiganjo David Waweru (Minority) and Tirop Evalyne Chepkoech to represent the youth.

Further, the Gender top-up list contains women and was aimed at ensuring a two-thirds gender rule, given only three Women MCAs were elected.
