Architects from the Ministry of Lands are in the final stages of drawing up a design for the ultra-modern market whose construction is expected to start soon.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim on Monday, March 13, 2023, said he has had an opportunity to look at the design of the multi-billion market.
He said many Eldoret residents and traders will love it, once it is complete.
“The new market, already designs have been done. It is a good structure. You will love it. Instead of hosting barely 1,000 traders, it will be able to house up to 20,000 traders who will be working from it,” Chelilim said.

“It is better we are patient and have a place we will all work from,” he added.
The national government has allocated Ksh6 billion for the construction of the modern market.
It has already been agreed that the new market will be constructed on the current 64 and the champions markets at the Eldoret Town CBD.
The two markets were closed in November 2022, following a clash between traders and county enforcement officers.
Support project
As part of the planning process for the new market, a delegation from the County Department of Trade and Cooperatives on March 14, 2023, held a discussion with architects from the Ministry of Lands and Housing.
The architects are in the final stages of designing and drawing the market.

Speaking during the meeting, Acting Chief Officer for Trade and Industrialization Ambrose Tarus said that Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim is passionate about the project adding that the department will provide the necessary support to see the works begin for traders to swing back to their normal trading operations.
The proposed market will have two levels of underground parking and five storeys that will host different businesses.
It will sit on a 3.25 acres plot.
Lands and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary Zachariah Mwangi had in January 2023 said President William Ruto will be the one to commission construction works of the modern market.

“I want to assure the public that we will move with speed. We will advertise this project and other markets next week and early next month, the President (William Ruto) will be coming to launch this project,” the CS had said during a visit to Eldoret town.
