DCI Shares Update on Probe Into Cyrus Jirongo’s Death, Reveals Owner of Probox Spotted at Accident Scene

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has provided an update into the fatal accident involving former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo.

Jirongo died in an accident at Karai area along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

Initial reports indicate that his death was a result of a head-on-collision accident between a Mercedes Benz vehicle he was driving and a Climax Bus heading to Western Kenya.

Following questions over circumstances under which Jirongo died, and suspicions over a Probox vehicle that was captured at EAGOl petrol station where the former MP entered before the accident, the DCI launched a probe.

In a statement on Thursday, December 26, 2026, DCI said it had interviewed owners of the said Probox.

Who owns Probox seen near Jirongo’s car crash?

According to the police, the vehicle belongs to an Nakuru Member of County Assembly (MCA) but managed by his wife.

The Probox was seen at a petrol station Jirongo’s vehicle entered moments before the fatal accident.

The said vehicle is registered to Hon. William Mutai, the Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly, and the same is managed by his wife,” DCI said.

However, at the time of the indicent, the vehicle had been hired to Denis Kipyegon Koech, who intended to transport family members to JKIA, Nairobi, to receive their son returning from New Mexico University in the USA.

Koech and his family reportedly departed Keringet for Nairobi on December 12, 2025, arriving at JKIA at 5:00 p.m.

Their son’s flight landed at around 10:00 p.m., and after completing clearance formalities, the family commenced their return journey to Keringet shortly after midnight.

While en route, and upon reaching Karai, the scene of the accident, they stopped at Eagol Petrol Station to refill their wiper fluid due to poor visibility. During this brief stop, they observed the deceased exiting the station and heading in the Nairobi direction,” the DCI noted in a statement.

Moments later, as they refilled the fluid, they heard a loud bang and saw a bus dragging the deceased’s vehicle,” it added.

Did Probox trail Jirongo from Nairobi?

According to the police, after Koech and his family completed the refill, they exited the petrol station and briefly stopped near the accident scene at the request of the petrol station guard, who sought their assistance in rescuing the victim.

They did not alight from their vehicle but instead used their headlights to illuminate the wreckage, as it was dark and no other vehicles had yet arrived.

They left the scene after other motorists began to arrive and traffic started building up, proceeding with their journey and arriving home at around 6:00 a.m., where they later learned that the victim of the accident was Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” the police said.

Meanwhile, the DCI said it is interrogating the veracity of the claims and reassured the family, friends, and the people of Kenya that thorough and impartial investigations into this incident are ongoing.

The former MP will be buried at his rural home on December 30, 2025.
