The Eldoret Municipal Board has put on notice individuals that have been dumping garbage outside the dumpsite in Kipkenyo.
Speaking during a meeting with private garbage collectors contracted to collect garbage across estates in Eldoret town, Municipality board chairman Julius Kitur and Manager Tito Koiyet also expressed the need for members of the public to be sensitized on the proper use of bins.
This follows concerns that locals were throwing litter outside the bins, instead of ensuring they are inside.
The County Government of Uasin Gishu invested heavily in setting up bins across Eldoret town, with rental house owners also required to have a bin where tenants throw their garbage.
During the meeting, Kitur and his team noted that cleaning the environment is one way to evade catastrophes such as diseases and hence the need to enhance delivery in the sector.
The meeting also discussed a variety of issues concerning residents dumping solid waste into neighborhood bushes, vehicles disposing dirt along the roads, the importance of providing data during each trip for the private garbage collectors, and taking part in greening the environment through tree planting exercises.
“All collections made must be recorded to enable us to know what measures to put in place to control and dispose of the solid waste. When all data is put in place, we can identify the trends and put interventions for the future management of solid waste,” said the Eldoret Municipality Manager Tito Koiyet.
“We are also giving a warning against dumping dirt outside the dump-site and we need to sensitize the public on the use of bins, and taking part in keeping the environment clean,” he added.
Eldoret is aspiring to be a city and the Municipality in collaboration with the County Government has been implementing various beautification projects – as they seek to meet the minimum requirements of being a city.
