Popular Rugby Tournament in Eldoret town – Chebarbar 7s is making a bold return.
This is after taking an over five year’s break.
The debut Chebarbar 7s tournament was held in 2014, and the two subsequent years – 2015 and 2016, but took a break since then.
But for the Rugby lovers in the city of champions, the tournament is back.
The official launch of the 2022 edition of the Chebarbar 7s was held at Eka Hotel in Eldoret town on Friday, July 1, 2022, where the date, venue and theme of the tournament were revealed.
“The 2022 edition is focusing on peace. The past editions were putting emphasis on drug abuse and community sensitization but this time, we want to sensitize Kenyans on peace,” said Anthony Chumba, one of the tournament’s co-founders.
“We also want to build the game. It’s time we brought back the game in a bigger and better way,” added Douglas Maina, a co-founder.
The Chebarbar 7s Rugby Tournament will be held at the Eldoret Sports Club on July 30, 2022.
Tournament’s co-founders say so far, 12 teams have confirmed their participation.
“The teams are from Uganda, Tanzania and here in Kenya,” Maina told Journalists during the launch of the event.
Winners of the tournament will be walking home with Ksh250,000 that will be shared among the top three teams.
The winner will get Ksh140,000 with the team that will finish second pocketing Ksh70,000, while third will get Ksh40,000.
With the return of the Chebarbar 7s tournament, the 2022 edition will feature only male teams.
“We hope the 2023 edition will also incorporate the ladies teams” said one of the tournament co-founders
