Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich on October 17, 2022, met a team from Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation and Rotary Club.
The two organizations are partnering with the County in improving the Emergency and Casualty Unit at the Iten County Referral Hospital (ICRH).
The Foundation, whose mission is to strengthen emergency medical care will install an oxygen gas manifold and do oxygen piping at the emergency and casualty unit at a cost of Sh5 million.
This is vital for critically ill patients in need of oxygen during admission.
Further, the county will procure oxygen flow meters and an electric surge protector.
Patients attended at the emergency unit will not be billed.
The teams were led by Emily Nyagaki from Emergency Medicine Kenya and Jane Mwaura from Rotary Club.
Fighting liver cancer
Later, Governor Rotich also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Moi University on how to contain the rise of liver cancer.
In the partnership which is being implemented by Moi University and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital with funding from French Government, the Kesses-based university will train 30 staff who include Clinical Officers, nurses and radiographers.
The officers from sub-county hospitals will then help in the early identification of those at high risk of developing early liver cancer and its early diagnosis.
They will also identify patients with liver cancer who will be referred to the hospital for treatment.
Moi University was represented by Professor Simon Mining and Dr Fatuma Some.
Kerio University
The governor later addressed residents from Rimoi who sought his audience on matters Rimoi Game Reserve before wrapping up the day when he received a technical report from the committee on the establishment of Kerio University.
“I am happy to report that this afternoon I received the technical report from the committee formed last month to oversee the establishment of Kerio Valley University,” he said.
The team had been given 30 days by the Governor to carry out their findings and recommendations on the establishment of the University.
Led by its chair Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot, the team handed in the details of their evaluation of the 2016 technical inspection report by the Commission of University Education (CUE).
Present during the events were Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek, County Commissioner John Korir, County Secretary Paul Chemmuttut and Keiyo North Deputy Commissioner Julius Maiyo among others.
