The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, welcomed the first High Court Judge to be based at the Iten Law Courts.
County Secretary Paul Chemmuttut represented Governor Alex Tolgos in welcoming Lady Justice Lucy Waithaka.
“We are very pleased that finally, we have you as our first Judge since independence. This is a big relief for us and the people of Elgeyo Marakwet who have been traveling long distances to Eldoret and even Nakuru to access justice,” said the Chemmuttut.
The CS said Governor Tolgos had made several requests to the Judiciary for the establishment of a High Court in Elgeyo Marakwet and had even offered to provide land for its establishment.
“It is befitting that finally, a Judge has been posted here before he completes his term as Governor,” added Chemmuttut.
Lady Justice Waithaka confirmed that indeed the Judiciary had approved the request from the County and posted her to Iten as the first Judge.
“When I received the posting, I was so glad to come because this County is like a second home since I went to High School at Kessup Girls back in the 1980s,” she said.
Justice Waithaka assured Elgeyo Marakwet residents that the Judiciary was keen on bringing its services closer to the people in the spirit of devolution.
“We shall work together to ensure that residents access to justice is enhanced to save our people time and money seeking justice outside the County,” she said.
Also present during the meeting were Senior Principal Magistrate Charles Kutwa and Senior Resident Magistrate Caroline Ateya who appreciated the cordial working relations between the Judiciary and the County Government.
“We shall continue to partner to ensure that we complement one another in the delivery of service to the people of Elgeyo Marakwet,” said Kutwa.
