JKUAT to Confer an Honorary Degree Upon Eliud Kipchoge

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) will in December confer an honorary degree upon Eliud Kipchoge, acclaimed as the world’s greatest marathoner.

The decision was unanimously endorsed by the Honorary Degrees Committee, University Senate, and Council, recognizing Kipchoge’s unparalleled achievements and contributions to society

JKUAT says the prestigious Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) will be, a testament to Kipchoge’s exceptional humanitarian efforts and philanthropic endeavours.

The official conferment ceremony is set to take place during the 41st JKUAT Graduation Ceremony on December 1st   2023, commencing at 8:00 a.m. at the Graduation Square, Juja Main Campus.

Eliud Kipchoge’s remarkable accomplishments extend beyond his unparalleled success in the sporting arena. His dedication to philanthropy and humanitarian causes through his foundation has made a tangible difference in the lives of many,” JKUAT said.

Kipchoge views the honorary degree as a symbol that every effort toward positive change, no matter how modest, carries significant weight in creating a larger impact.

It is an immense honour to receive this prestigious recognition from JKUAT. Beyond running, my purpose has always been to inspire and contribute to making our world a better place. I am truly humbled and inspired to continue my journey of giving back to society,” the marathoner said during a tree-planting exercise at the university on November 16, 2023.

Kipchoge further noted that JKUAT has inspired him to do a lot more in society and on a personal level.

Exemplary contributions to society

He encouraged the JKUAT fraternity on its ongoing research as he noted its contribution to Agricultural Research.

Speaking during the ceremony, JKUAT Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, added that the University is delighted to confer him with the degree due to his exemplary contributions to society e.g. in building libraries, and sponsoring students in his foundation, as well as his passion in conservation by planting trees in different parts of the country.

In addition, the VC highlighted that the award is a tribute to Kipchoge’s unwavering dedication to societal welfare, setting an exemplary standard that transcends the world of sports.

His profound impact reaches far beyond athletic achievements, resonating deeply within communities and inspiring positive change.
