Kerio Valley Farmers Receive High Value Iron-Rich Beans Seeds to Combat Malnutrition

Over 4.5 metric tonnes of iron and zinc rich beans (nyota) seeds have been distributed to farmers across Kerio Valley.

The program funded through the Emergency Locust Response Program (ELRP) targets to benefit farmers in Soy North, Endo, Sambirir and Arror electoral wards.

Elgeyo Marakwet Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Edwin Seroney led the distribution exercise for the beans on Saturday, September 22, 2024.

The objective of the initiative to combat malnutrition in the area.

Sambirir ward received 1,020 kgs, Endo 1,530, and Soy North 1,900 kilograms.

Farmers in Arror Ward received the beans sometime in July.

The two to three months climate resilient and early maturity crop, according to the CECM, retail between Ksh150 to 200 per kilogram in the market.

The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has also supported school feeding program in eight schools in Sambirir Ward with each school receiving 10 kilograms of the bean seeds.
