The Uasin Gishu County Department of Health Services on Tuesday hosted officers from the Nawiri program to discuss how to tackle mental health challenges which have become a burden in urban areas.
Speaking in his office, County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Dr Sam Kotut noted that one of the ways to tackle the mental health problem is by entrenching mental health awareness and support within urban communities.
He said the move will help in addressing the challenge and work towards reducing the disease burden related to mental health.
“We need to establish strong links between mental health institutions and other healthcare facilities across the county where individuals with mental health issues can easily access the necessary rehabilitative services they need,” said Dr Kotut.
Awareness of mental health
The County Executive also emphasized the importance of developing policies that will guide health facilities in promoting mental health and providing rehabilitation services ensuring that mental health issues are not overlooked and that individuals in need receive the support and care they deserve.
Further, Chief Officer for Promotive and Preventive Health Dr Joyce Sang said that it is crucial to raise awareness about mental health and break the stigma associated with it since many individuals suffering from mental health issues are afraid to seek help due to fear of judgment and discrimination.
“By promoting mental health awareness, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking the assistance they need,” said Dr Sang.
On his part, Clinical Services Chief Officer Dr. Paul Wangwe noted that reducing the disease burden related to mental health requires collaboration between various stakeholders including; government agencies, healthcare professionals, community organizations, and individuals themselves.
He also said that by working together, they can develop comprehensive strategies to address mental health issues, including prevention, early intervention, and long-term rehabilitation.
