University Academic Staff Union (UASU) officials at Moi University have threatened to resume a suspended strike, accusing the institution’s management and council of refusing dialogue over Ksh 1.75 billion in unpaid salaries and statutory deductions.
In a statement issued by UASU Moi University Chapter Secretary Prof. Robert Oduori, the union said the Acting University Management and the Council have refused to engage them dialogue in dialogue.
The dispute centers on the 2017-2021 CBA Return-To-Work Formula signed after industrial action in 2024 and 2025. Under the formula, “in financial year 2025/2026, Ksh 1.25billion was to be availed to pay 2017-2021 CBA salary arrears. This has not been fulfilled,” the statement reads.

UASU also flagged Ksh 500 million meant for “pension, welfare, benevolent fund, and other related obligations” that was due by end of January 2025 but remains unpaid.
The officials lamented that retirees have been left without pensions while staff with loans face auction threats from banks.
UASU demands to Moi University
In addition, the union questioned use of public funds, noting that “in the supplementary budget February 2026, Ksh 6.2 billion was allocated to Moi University.” It is now demanding full transparency and accountability regarding the utilisation of the he allocation.
Other demands include:
- Immediate payment of Kshs 1.25 billion owed as salary arrears under the 2017-2021 CBA.
- Immediate release of Kshs 500 million for pension, welfare, benevolent fund, and other related obligations.

Prof. Oduori also raised governance concerns, claiming the current management was in office illegally.
“Why are we talking of financial difficulties yet we are paying two sets of Managers? Substantive (enjoying perks) while resting at home and, Acting Managers? Does that make sense? Do we have shortage of man-power? Don’t we have rules, guidelines and procedure to guide all these processes?” the Uasin official said.
“We are being pushed toward industrial action, and we may be forced to resume the suspended strike if these matters are not addressed without further delay,” the statement warns.
The Return-To-Work Formula was signed by the Principal Secretary, Higher Education; Council Chairperson; Vice Chancellor; UASU National Secretary General; and UASU-Moi Chapter Secretary on November 30, 2024 to end a three-month strike at Moi University.
