Gladys Boss, MP Martha Wangare Visist Parents Affected by Utumishi Girls Academy Fire

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei, on Friday, May 29, 2026, joined Gilgil Member of Parliament Martha Wangare in visiting the grieving parents of the Utumishi Girls Academy following a tragic fire incident.

The Uasin Gishu County Woman MP shared photos grieving with the affected parents.

She expressed the need to get to the root cause of the tragedy.

Today I spent the day with my friend and colleague Hon Martha Wangare MP, Gilgil Town. We visited the grieving parents of the girls of Utumishi school. As a parent, I say, we need to get to the root cause of this tragedy,” Shollei said.

The fire incident that reportedly happened on the night of Wednesday, May 27, 2026, claimed the lives of 16 students.

Several other students were injured. They are admitted to various hospitals in Nakuru and Nairobi.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is already probing the incident, with preliminary investigations indicating the fire could have been started by students.

At least 30 students have been detained over the possible role in the incident, while the Ministry of Education has dissolved the school’s board for failure to adhere to safety measures as per set regulations.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba also noted that the school principal and two teachers alleged to have been informed of a planned student unrest, will be subjected to disciplinary action by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
