Over 240,000 Dead Persons Discovered In Voters’ Register

A preliminary audit report of the country’s voters’ register has revealed that there are at least 240,000 persons listed who have since died.

The audit being conducted by KPMG, a global network of professional firms providing audit services, also reveals that there are over slightly below half a million voters that have duplicate records in the register.

Over 200,000 other voters in the register were registered with Identity cards that do not belong to them.

The Commission has received a preliminary audit report from KPMG with useful information, including 246,465 deceased voters, 481,711 duplicate records, and 226,143 voters registered with IDs that don’t validly belong to them,” IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati told Journalists at Bomas of Kenya on Wednesday, June 8, 2022.

There are also 164,269 registrations with voter records with invalid identification documents (IDs and Passports) that have to be addressed prior to certification and publishing of the register,” Chebukati added.

The preliminary audit report findings basically mean there are at least a million voters irregularly listed in the register of voters ahead of the August 9 polls.

And due to the implementation of preliminary audit findings from KPMG on the register, the electoral body said it has decided to address the findings prior to certifying the register for publication on/or before 20th June 2022.

The register had been scheduled for publication on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

IEBC notes that it is scheduled to receive the final audit report from KPMG on June 16, 2022, and thereafter engage stakeholders on the final register of voters on June 17, 2022.

Revelations of over a million invalid voters in the register come just days after Deputy President William Ruto claimed over a million voters from his strongholds had been removed from the register of voters.

We expect that everybody who is concerned including the EU to try and get as much detail as possible both from the electoral commission and these public officials on what all this is all about and how did close to a million names disappear from the register. And many of those names are from what we consider our stronghold. It is a clear attempt to try some monkey games,” DP Ruto told European Union (EU) envoys during a breakfast meeting on June 2, 2022.

DP Ruto is vying for the presidency using his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party under Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
