Parliament Releases Report on Rigathi Gachagua Impeachment’s Public Participation

The National Assembly has released the results of the public participation exercise on the Special Motion for the proposed removal from office, by impeachment, of the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua.

The exercise was conducted on Friday, 4th October, and Saturday, 5th October 2024, in the offices of the 290 Constituencies and 47 County MPs.

According to the Report, 221,231 citizens submitted their views on the Motion, of which 144,111 (65.11%) voted in favour of it, while 74,768 (33.78%) voted against it.

What did residents say about Gachagua’s impeachment?

Residents of at least four constituencies who participated in the nationwide public participation exercise supported his proposed ouster. All participants from Balambala, Fafi, Magarini and Mandera South, voted in favor of the Special Motion that was sponsored by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, showing 100% support for impeachment.

During the exercise, 428 residents of Balambala constituency supported the Special Motion. In Fafi, Magarini, and Mandera South constituencies, all the 301, 263, and 124 participants, respectively, also affirmed their support.

Several other constituencies also showed high support for the Special Motion. In Tiaty, Lagdera, Dadaab, Lafey, Tarbaj, Kinango, and Banissa, only one person opposed the Motion. The turnout in these areas was 546, 473, 300, 183, 124, and 101, respectively.

Other constituencies with strong support for the Motion included Ijara (99.6%), Mandera East (99.5%), Mt. Elgon (99.16%), Kacheliba (99.20%), Likoni (99.31%), Mandera North (99.36%), Loima (99.28%), and Sirisia (99.4%).

On Tuesday, October 8, the National Assembly concluded the deliberation of the Special Motion. 282 MPs voted in support of the Motion, 44 opposed it, and one MP abstained.

The matter has since been referred to the Senate in accordance with Standing Order 64(6) and 65.
