The National Police Service (NPS) has issued an update regarding a fatal road accident in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County.
NPS in a statement on its official Social Media pages said the accident happened around 8.30 on at Josa area, along Wundanyi-Mwatate Road.
The accident, police say, involved a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) bus – make Nissan.
“Onboard the bus were about 34 adult passengers including children from a burial at Mghambonyi area,” said the National Police Service in part of the statement.
Further, the statement indicated that preliminary investigations had revealed that the bus was moving from Wundanyi General direction heading towards Mwatate direction.
“Upon reaching Josa area, the vehicle veered off the road and rolled several times before landing into a ditch about 100 metres from the road,” noted the police.
So far, official data from the NPS says the accident claimed 10 lives – nine women and a man – all of who were adults.
Another 17 people were seriously injured, and one adult slightly injured.
Three children and one infant were also seriously injured following the accident.
“All were victims taken to Mwatate Sub County Hospital and Moi Level 5 Hospital for treatment,” said the police in the statement.
“The driver is still in a critical condition,” it added.
Efforts are underway to retrieve the extensively damaged vehicle.
So far, police say five dead bodies have been positively identified.
