Members of the Rastafari Movement of Kenya have held a consultative meeting with United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Secretary General Hassan Omar.
During the meeting, the Rastafari Movement lobbied for more recognition and assurances of their social rights by the government.
Led by Ras Lojuron Jahden Wambua, their prophet, the movement members said their 4.8 million members were ready to work with the Government movement and sought recognition and more inclusion in the affairs of national development.
They particularly sought President William Ruto’s administration to consider them for State jobs appointment, register their spiritual movement, allow their children to be in school unshaven in accordance with the movement’s beliefs, pray at national events and an end to discrimination and stigmatization.
On his part, Omar, who praised the movement for their consistent fight for human rights and justice worldwide, assured them of the government’s commitment to accord them their rights as enjoyed by minority and marginalized communities, and as enshrined in the Constitution.
“President William Ruto’s government acknowledges the role of the minority and marginalized groups. We look forward to working with you as we better the lives of Kenyans across the country,” said the UDA secretary general.
The leaders of the movement, whose members have not been voting in past elections, further said they would mobilize them in support of President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
