Nandi Senator Samson Cherarkey has sought a Statement from the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations concerning the alleged assault of youths by police officers in Nandi Hills Town, Nandi County.
Senator Cherarkey called for urgent investigations and accountability following an incident reported on the night of 10th January 2026.
“Mr. Speaker, Sir, on the night of 10th January 2026, police officers stormed an entertainment establishment in Nandi Hills and assaulted several youths who were playing a game of pool, leaving some nursing injuries,” he stated.
The Senator urged the Committee, chaired by Senator Fatuma Dullo, to provide a comprehensive report detailing the status of investigations into the matter, including the agencies leading the inquiry, timelines, and any interim findings.
Further, he called on the Committee to outline any disciplinary, administrative, or criminal action taken against the officers involved, and to clarify measures put in place to ensure both individual and command responsibility.
Senator Cherarkey also requested clarification on the circumstances under which the officers entered the entertainment establishment and whether their actions complied with existing laws, regulations, and professional policing standards.
In addition, he asked the Committee to detail the nature of injuries sustained by the affected youths, the medical treatment administered, psychosocial support provided, and any compensation or victim-support mechanisms available to them.
The Senator further sought information on the safeguards and oversight mechanisms currently in place to prevent police brutality and abuse of authority, including how such mechanisms are enforced and any identified gaps.
In addition, he called for an explanation of clear measures being undertaken to restore public confidence in law enforcement within Nandi Hills, including community engagement initiatives and proposed reforms aimed at addressing police misconduct.
In a separate request, the Nandi Senator also sought a Statement from the Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing regarding the recent suspension of Kenya Airways flights to Eldoret International Airport.
He asked the Committee to outline the measures being taken to safeguard regional connectivity and protect economic development in the North Rift region.
