Trans Nzoia University to Start Soon as Task Force is Established

Plans to start a public university in Trans Nzoia County are progressing well following the formation of a task force dedicated to its establishment.

The task force members, as listed in Gazette Notice Number 7057 dated May 24, 2023, include Prof. Masibo Lumala from Moi University, Julius Kivaze, Alfred Wamang’oli, Prof. Peter Ngure, and Dr. Hellen Yego, who was an aspirant for the 2022 Trans Nzoia senatorial seat.a

Other members include Prof. Batan Khaemba, Rose Mambili, Milka Psiwa (Baringo Chief Officer), Prof. Caleb Elungat, Prof. Mathews Bulitia, and educationist Eliud Wakasiaka.

The task force’s responsibilities include proposing a name for the university, determining its location, and defining its academic character.

They will also develop a vision, mission, diversity statement, philosophy, and justification for the university among others.

Additionally, the task force will assess the institutional abilities and expertise of the Trans Nzoia County government, which is the university’s sponsor for providing higher education.

The notice further states that the task force will evaluate various resources such as land, physical facilities, finances, staff, library services, teaching and research infrastructure, as well as plant and equipment.

The establishment of a university in Trans Nzoia is crucial as neighboring counties such as Turkana, West Pokot, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu, Busia, and Kakamega already have at least one university each, and Trans Nzoia has been lagging behind in this regard.
