Members of the Pambazuka Women Group in Uasin Gishu County are enjoying the fruits of their hard work in potato farming.

Yego speaking during the event said the Pambazuka Women Group in Tarakwa ward, Kesses sub-county had ventured into potato farming under the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture project.

Through the project being implemented by the County Government of Uasin Gishu, the women group was funded with Ksh475,000.

The money was then used in a potato farming venture, out of which they harvested 360 bags.

Further, of all the bags harvested, 150 were sold with the remaining divided among members to be used as seeds and others distributed to the needy community.

The Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP) is a Government of Kenya project jointly supported by the World Bank. KCSAP is being implemented over five years (2017-2022) under the framework of the Agriculture Sector Development Strategy (ASDS) (2010-2020) and the National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS, 2010).

Meanwhile, as the Pambazuka Women Group enjoys the fruits of potato farming, CECM Yego says potatoes are emerging food crops.

Potatoes have emerged as new food crops.

He reveals that the County is now working with the private sector to encourage both smallholder and large-scale farmers to venture into it noting that they are going to help farmers market their produce.

The Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project, the county executive says, is set to provide an excellent opportunity to transform climate-smart agriculture to mitigate climate change.
