The County Government of Uasin Gishu is poised to benefit from the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP) Slum Upgrading Programme.
This initiative aims to enhance the living conditions in informal settlements across the county.
Dr. Janet Kosgey, the County Executive Committee member for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, highlighted that the programme will target settlements such as Langas, Ngomongo, Kamukunji, Burnt Forest, Turbo Township, Cheboiywo, and Moi’s Bridge.
“These informal settlements each present unique characteristics and challenges,” Dr. Kosgey remarked.
By focusing on infrastructure upgrades and improving living conditions through community engagement, we will create a better environment for the residents.”
On Monday, a team from KISIP was in Eldoret where the need to first identify specific requirements and devise effective strategies for each settlement was emphasized.
This approach aims to provide valuable insights for enhancing current conditions and preventing new slum formations.
Chief Officer of Housing and Urban Development, Julius Koech, identified urgent areas for intervention including road infrastructure, water supply, waste management, sanitation, and housing quality.
In addition , Beatrice Menjo, Director of Housing, noted that the Government’s ongoing affordable housing programme complements the new KISIP initiative, which is highly appreciated by residents, particularly those with low incomes.
Also present in the meeting were Director Lands Nelly Jerotich and Director Public Works Eng. Benjamin Kirongo.
