Uasin Gishu to Establish GIS Lab, Formulate Policy on Land Fragmentation

/

Uasin Gishu County Government through the Department of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development is yet again a big beneficiary of Food Agriculture Organization funding of various projects.

The latest funding will see the county work on the establishment of a Modern GIS Laboratory, policy formulation on land fragmentation and subdivision as well as land use and development plans for various trading centres.

While in a workshop with the FAO and the County Technical team in charge of the projects, County Executive Committee Member for the Department Dr. Janeth Kosgey emphasized the need to fast-track the processes involved to see the success of implementation of the projects.

We have identified gaps in the implementation of land fragmentation and subdivisions especially due to frequent sale of land, growth in urban centres and inheritance, hence under this program; we are tabling a policy that will seek to protect Uasin Gishu Agricultural farms because our County is the Nations Food basket,” noted Dr. Kosgey.

Food security is key and we must address land subdivisions to avert further fragmentation,” she added.

Efficient land use

Chief Officer Lands and Physical Planning Nathan Korir noted the need to have the policy as soon as possible because continued fragmentation hampers agricultural productivity,  economic growth and sustainable land management.

The policy seeks to promote land consolidation,  efficient land use and improve livelihoods,” noted Korir.

In addition, Director Lands Nelly Jerotich together with her Counterpart Director Physical Planning Planner Daniel Koech,  emphasised the need to ensure that trading centre plans are implemented before the end of April 2024 so as to enable FAO to fast-track attainment of Land tenure documents for the trading centres.

The projects are being implemented through Food Agriculture Organization funding.
