UDA, Jubilee Unveil Uasin Gishu County Assembly Leadership

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Jubilee party have unveiled their leadership in the Uasin Gishu County Assembly.

UDA is the majority party with 26 elected Members of the County Assembly and 13 nominated while the Jubilee party has two elected MCAs and one nominated.

Having the majority, the President William Ruto-led party is legally required to pick the powerful county assembly leader of the majority and the majority chief whip.

Jubilee party on the other hand gets the leader of the minority seat.

In the leadership unveiled on Friday, September 30, 2022, Megun MCA Julius Sang was picked as the leader of the majority.

Sang is serving his second term.

For the position of the majority chief whip, it was handed to the Tulwet/Chuiyat MCA Julius Songok. Songok was also re-elected in the August 9, 2022, general election.

It is the first time since 2013 that the Uasin Gishu County Assembly has a change in the two top positions.

The previous holder of the leader of the majority seat for two terms Josephat Lowoi lost during UDA nominations. Lowoi was the Karuna/Mibeki MCA.

Immediate former Chief Whip David Sing’oei also failed in his bid to run for the Uasin Gishu gubernatorial seat.

Immediate former Ng’enyilel MCA David Sing’oei. He served as the majority chief whip for two terms between 2013 and 2017.

The position of the leader of the minority was handed to Langas MCA Peter Muya. Muya is serving his third consecutive term.

First female deputy speaker

Further, in the other influential Deputy Speaker of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly, history was made after the position was handed to Kimumu MCA Sarah Malel.

This makes Malel the first woman in Uasin Gishu to hold the Deputy Speaker seat. She is serving her second term after getting re-election in the August 9 poll.

She was among the three women MCAs that were elected in the county.

The Kimumu MCA now becomes the second Uasin Gishu County Assembly Deputy Speaker taking over from Hosea Lamai.

Lamai held the position for two terms, but lost the Kapsaos MCA seat to a UDA candidate, having vied as an independent candidate.

Earlier in the month, Phillip Melly had been elected the Speaker in the first sitting of the assembly convened by Governor Jonathan Bii Chelili alias Koti Moja.

With the leadership complete, the Uasin Gishu County Assembly is now set to kick off its legislative role.
