We all know that it is children that wear pampers – which helps them from wetting the beds because their muscles are not yet well developed.
But there are also elderly people who wear pampers. This is usually because of various conditions among them old age.
However, in some incidences, we have men whose muscles are not strong enough. They cannot hold on to urine once the bladder is full – ending up bedwetting.
Such kinds of men have to wear pampers – just like kids – usually because of health conditions.
William Getumbe, an Eldoret-based musician is such men. While many with similar conditions have kept it a secret, the musician who is also a counselling psychologist and an activist has decided to make it public.
On December 23, 2022, Getumbe brought Eldoret West Market to a standstill as showed up wearing only pampers.
The idea behind this rare but bold move is to sensitize members of the public to the fact that some men also wear pampers.
“I am among those people that bed wet. This is a condition that I have been battling since 2019,” the gospel musician and producer told journalists.
Stigma
He notes that when he came to know of the condition, he had to be taken through counselling apart from medication.
“The reason I am highlighting this issue is to let members of the public know that it is not wrong for a grown-up to wear pampers. I am also asking those with a similar condition not to be afraid,” says the musician.
He however admits that many men with the condition have opted to keep it a secret in fear of the stigma they will get from the community.
Getumbe has been involved in public sensitisation on the matter for several months now. He has been to Kakamega among other towns within Western Kenya – spreading the message he hopes will change the perception that members of the public have of men wearing pampers.
“Some have welcomed and embraced the campaign while others are still living in denial,” notes the musician.
Medical experts note that there are many reasons why a man can bed wed. Some of them are Diabetes, blockage (obstruction) in part of the urinary tract, such as from a bladder stone or kidney stone, Bladder problems, Enlarged prostate or medical side effects.
