Institutions of higher learning on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, presented their written and oral submissions to support, differ or reject the proposal for elevation of Kesses-Chebaiywo township to Municipality status.
They were led by representatives from Moi University, High School principals, Primary school heads, ECDE heads and Child care givers.
Moi University head of Administration and Planning, Prof Minning representing the Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kosgey gave the historical journey of Moi University that set the pace for the growth of Kesses- Chebaiywo township into the economies as seen currently.
“Elevation of Kesses-Chebaiywo township to Municipality will be a big gain to the Institutions around and beyond,” Prof Mining said.
“The developments that come with elevation supercedes any other thought,” he added.
Benefits of Kesses-Chebaiywo township elevation
In addition, the Moi University don noted that most of their facilities offer services even to the community including the Margaret Thatcher Library which is currently ranked as the biggest library in East Africa.
“We also have in our plan provision for an airstrip, sports complex, weather station, sewerage systems, water supply and a social hall which are all viable projects that will benefit the Municipality greatly, ” noted Prof Mining.
While leading the session, the chairperson of the ad hoc committee Sila Maiyo, appreciated the huge turn up by the school heads who emphasised that elevation of Kesses-Chebaiywo township to Municipality will attract funding under programs such as Kenya Urban Support Programme, Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Programme and others that will improve the livelihoods of residents in the area.
Joining the school heads were representatives from the board members of the various schools and retired teachers who gave their views.
They all gave a straight yes to elevation of Kesses-Chebaiywo township to Municipality.
