The Eldoret Rescue Centre on Thursday received a donation of food and non-food items from artists from Madagascar, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
The artists are in Eldoret for a concert set for (Friday) at the Eldoret Sports Club.
Speaking after receiving the donations, Esther Serem, the Rescue Centre Manager, said they will go a long way towards supporting the children and adults being housed at the facility run by the county.
Serem also called for other well-wishers to come out and support the centre.
“We want to appreciate you for the donations and on behalf of the Governor we thank you,” she said.
Transitory rescue centre
According to Serem, the Eldoret Rescue Centre houses mostly children taken from the streets as well as the elderly who were previously drug addicts.
It is the only such facility in Kenya – being run by a county – and serves up to 17 counties and neighbouring countries.
“We have varied ages – both girls and boys as well as men. We’re doing a lot of rehabilitation of different groups. We also do medical screening for all that come here,” she said.
Highlighting some of the key services the Eldoret Rescue Centre offers, Serem said they currently have two ECDE classes that have 42 children – most of them rescued from the streets while others have since transitioned to primary school and even universities.
“This is a transitory rescue centre, not a home. We are transitioning them to school, their respective homes etc. We feel happy when we return these children to their homes,” said the Eldoret Rescue Centre Manager.
Earlier, the Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK) also donated food stùff to the Rescue Centre.
