Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisely Rotich is set to launch the inaugural ‘Gavana wa Raia Cup Football Tournament’ this week.
Posters shared on the county’s official Facebook page indicate that the tournament which will be held from the location level is set to kick off on Saturday, July 15, 2023.
“Biggest football tournament in the county is about to kick off. Teams and players note the important dates for each ward,” read part of the caption for the poster.
Finals for the tournament have been slated for August 13, 2023.
Football teams from across Elgeyo Marakwet County will be participating.
Preliminaries for the Gavana wa Raia Cup Football Tournament will be on July 15, 2023 and July 22, 2023, followed by Ward Finals on the weekend of July 29th and 30th 2023.

Winners from the Ward Finals will then proceed to the Sub-County Finals on the first weekend of August 2023.
Champions in each of the Sub Counties will then face off in the county finals.
The grand prize for the tournament has been set at Ksh1 million while the team that will finish second takes away Ksh500,000.
The third placed team will also take home Ksh250,000 with the fourth team allocated Ksh100,000.
Elgeyo Marakwet is known for being home to athletes that have over the years put Kenya on the global map by winning some of the major international races.
However, the football tournament is meant to provide a platform to also nurture other talents amongst the youths in the county.
