Former Soy Member of Parliament Edwin Barchilei has declared his intention to vie for the constituency seat in the 2027 General Election, setting up what could be a competitive race for the area’s top political position.
The seat is currently held by David Kiplagat, who was elected in 2022 to succeed Caleb Kositany. Apart from Barchilei and Kiplagat, Major (Rtd) Abel Rotich is also among those said to be eyeing the seat.
“When I was MP, I built schools and brought electricity to our people,” Barchilei said as he sought to sell his development record to voters.
The former legislator said education would be a key pillar of his campaign, citing his previous bursary programme for needy students. He noted that during his tenure, the Constituency Development Fund stood at about KSh 60 million, compared to the current allocation of approximately KSh250 million.

According to Barchilei, many students received bursaries of not less than KSh10,000 despite the limited funds available at the time.
“My initiative for 2027/2028 is that no child in a day school will be sent home because of school fees as long as I am your MP,” he said.
Barchilei also appealed for unity among those seeking the seat, saying reports indicate that six aspirants are interested in the contest.
“I ask that you remember all those asking for the MP seat. I hear they are six. Bishop, pray for them. The only issue is that only one person will get the seat,” he said.
The former MP further touted his performance in office, claiming that Soy Constituency was ranked second nationally in service delivery among the country’s 290 constituencies between 2013 and 2017.
“In 2027, Barchilei is going back to Parliament,” he declared.
