Governor Jonathan Bii has called on the leadership of various county Cooperative Societies to instil good governance to ensure the societies keep running as they have proven to be among key sectors that contribute immensely to the growth of businesses and economies.
Speaking on Friday at the county headquarters during a meeting with cooperatives leaders, the governor said cooperative societies have the potential of making the economy of Uasin Gishu vibrant challenging them to embrace automation to not only ease the flow of information but also woo the youth who are the gurus in the digital space to join these ventures.
“You have a duty as societies to repay your loans so that other cooperatives can benefit from the same funds,” noted Bii.
The County Assembly committee chair for Cooperatives and Enterprise Hillary Kipchumba noted that they are going to support implementations of laws that support Cooperatives for more people to achieve the ‘pesa mkononi‘ objective.
On her part, Trade and Cooperatives County Executive Committee Member Martha Cheruto challenged the cooperators to embrace emerging trends in coming to speed with what is happening across the globe.
“As we work on reviving the dormant cooperatives, let us also ensure compliance in our societies. Remember that there’s power in aggregation by coming together,” said Cheruto.
Agriculture CECM Edward Sawe further urged them to join cooperatives to get government services at ease citing the forthcoming issuance of subsidized fertilizer as an example. The commodity will be availed to farmers within their reach.
The county government has so far distributed at least Ksh648 million to over 200 Cooperatives recently being the issuance of Ksh46 million to 27 Cooperatives.
