Huruma Sub County Eye Unit Performs Over 150 Cataract Surgeries

/

Over the past year, the Huruma Sub County Eye Unit has successfully performed more than 150 cataract surgeries and provided over 120,000 general eye screenings, as part of an initiative to promote preventive eye care in the region.

Equipped with advanced infrastructure and essential surgical consumables, including specialized cataract kits and cataract sets, which are vital for conducting eye surgeries, the County Government of Uasin Gishu in partnership with Operation Eyesight has actively engaged in outreach programs, including the training of Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) for door-to-door screening.

This grassroots approach not only increases awareness of eye health but also facilitates early detection of eye conditions within the community.

Speaking during a visit to the Huruma sub-county eye unit, Clinical Services Chief Officer Dr. Joyce Sang noted that they have launched a school screening program aimed at identifying and addressing vision issues among students in the county.

The establishment of the Huruma eye unit, Ziwa and Burnt Forest is a major milestone achieved through a partnership with Operation Eyesight. This aims to address the rising demand for eye health services. The unit is equipped with advanced infrastructure and essential surgical consumables, including specialized cataract kits and cataract sets, which are vital for eye surgeries,” said Dr Sang.
