The newly formed Kapsabet Catholic Diocese has its first bishop.
Formed from the expansive Eldoret Catholic Diocese, the Kapsabet Diocese will cover all Catholic churches within the Nandi County.
The new diocese will now be headed by Bishop John Kiplimo Lelei.
Lelei who has been serving as the auxiliary Bishop of the Eldoret Catholic Diocese was appointed to the role on Thursday, July 10, 2025.
His appointment was confirmed by Upendo FM, an Eldoret-based radio station run by the Eldoret Catholic Diocese.
“This is a historic and blessed moment for the faithfuls in the region, as Bishop Lelei brings with him a heart of service, deep spiritual wisdom, and a passion for shepherding God’s people,” read a statement on the station’s Facebook page.

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has welcomed the establishment of a diocese in his county and the appointment of a new bishop.
Sang, in a statement on his Facebook page said the latest development marks a significant milestone in the growth and development of the Catholic Church in the region.
“The establishment of the Diocese reflects the growing number of faithful and the Church’s commitment to deepening its pastoral mission,” the county boss said.
“We warmly welcome Bishop Lelei to his new role and pray for God’s guidance and blessings as he shepherds the faithful with wisdom, humility, and devotion,” he added.
The governor said Bishop Lelei’s deep spiritual insight and strong commitment to service will enrich the spiritual lives of many and strengthen the Church’s presence in our region.
The Eldoret Catholic Diocese will now cover only two counties – Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet and it remains under the leadership of Bishop Dominic Kimengich.
