The busy Mai Mahiu – Narok highway has been temporarily closed.
Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) on Sunday announced the closure of the highway following a reported huge crack on a section of it.
In a statement issued by the authority’s Corporate Communications Department, the cause of the crack is yet to be identified.
It is however suspected to be as a result of ongoing heavy rainfall.
“KENHA would like to notify motorists and the general public about the closure of Mai Mahiu – Narok Highway. This closure has been accasioned by a severe crack that has occured six kilometres from Mai Mahiu Town towards Mai Mahiu, cutting across the road and thus rendering the road unsafe to motorists,” read part of the statement.
“The cause of the crack has not been established, though preliminary reports attribute it to the ongoing rains,” it added.
According to KENHA, this is not the first time the highway has witnessed a similar crack
The area has in the past been affected by similar earth movements, the authority said.
Meanwhile, as KENHA embarks on restoring works on the affected area, all road users plying the Mai Mahiu – Narok route have been are advised to use the two alternative routes provided.
They are Narok – Kisiriri – Mau Summit – Njoro turn off (B18) and Narok – Bomet – Kaplong (B6) Road and connect to Kaplong – Kericho (B7) road.
“The authority is working round the clock to restore the damaged section of the road . More updates will follow in due course,” KENHA noted in the statement
