Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly on Tuesday passed a motion that if implemented will see cultural sites and centers established.
In the motion moved by Tarakwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Thomas Yego, the county legislators asked the county executive to come up with a policy framework that will guide the establishment of the centres and sites.
Yego argued that the cultural rites and heritage were at risk of being extinct by foreign influence, and that already strange practices are cropping into the society.
“Many communities have discarded their core values and instead embraced alien cultures that may have led to moral decadence that has resulted in immoral values like gayism, lesbianism, drug abuse and this occasioning social anarchy,” the MCA said.
He further pointed out that cultural deterioration can be halted through the establishment of cultural and heritage sites that will be used to show rich traditions.
“Cognisant that such sites can develop and become economic centres, this honourable house urges the County Government of Uasin Gishu to come up with a policy framework that will guide the establishment of Uasin Gishu Cultural sites and centres,” noted the Tarakwa ward representative while moving the motion.
MCAs present supported the motion which was later passed unanimously.
It will now be forwarded to the county executive for consideration and implementation.
Culture and heritage are highlighted as a key identity of people under the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
