Moi University has come out to issue a clarification over its ongoing auction of items.
The university, in a statement on Thursday, June 19, 2025, said the auction was being conducted strictly in accordance with the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, 2015 and all applicable government regulations.
“The exercise involves the disposal of unserviceable, obsolete, or surplus assets, as part of a routine and lawful institutional process,” read part of the statement by the acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut.
It further pointed out that the disposal was being overseen by the University’s Disposal Committee and follows all established legal and procedural frameworks to ensure transparency, accountability and compliance.
Reports of the university auctioning multiple items have been widely reported across mainstream and social media.
Which items are Moi University auctioning?
Some of the items Moi University is auctioning include dogs, pigs, donkeys and used tyres.
The move has initially linked to the institution’s current financial struggles.
But in the statement, the Uasin Gishu based public university said the auction has nothing to do with its financial status.
“We also wish to strongly dispel any misleading claims or insinuations being circulated in some media reports suggesting otherwise. The auction exercise does not imply or suggest any irregular activity, nor does it relate to issues outside the lawful disposal of assets,” the VC said.
He also said Moi University remains committed to the principles of good governance, prudent resource management and public accountability.
The university is facing financial crisis with the management recently revealing that it has a debt running into Ksh 8.8 billion.
Plans are already ongoing to address the crisis through among others downsizing of the workforce.
Already over 300 redundancy letters have been issued to both teaching and non-teaching staff.
