Nandi County Assembly Adjourned Indefinitely

/

Nandi County Assembly has adjourned its session sine die. The decision follows a recent violent altercation among Members.

The ugly scenes were witnessed on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, as the MCAs were debating a report on Project Status for the Fiscal Years 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 tabled by an ad-hoc committee.

In a statement issued on Friday, November 15, 2024, assembly Speaker Philemon Melly said he had to adjourn indefinitely due to the destruction caused by the incident, among other things. The Speaker said several MCAs were also injured.

In exercise of the powers bestowed upon me under Standing Order 111(1) and considering the prevailing situation, I had to adjourn the House,” stated Speaker Melly.

The grave disorderly acts displayed contravene Chapter Six of the Constitution, the County Assemblies Powers and Privileges Act, and the Nandi County Assembly Standing Orders,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Speaker said investigations into the happenings that led to the mayhem and chaos had been initiated and that appropriate action would be taken against anyone who would be found culpable.

I call upon Hon. Members of County Assembly to lead by example and exercise restraint while fulfilling their constitutional mandate,” Speaker Melly emphasized.

I assure the great people of Nandi that despite what transpired, the Nandi County Assembly remains committed to justice and governance at all times.”

He further said the date for the resumption of the Nandi County Assembly’s activities will be communicated in due course.
