UDA Announces Nomination Date For Elgeyo Marakwet Senate Seat By-Election

UDA has set the date on which it will hold nominations to pick a candidate that will fly its flag in the upcoming Elgeyo Marakwet Senate by-election.

The seat fell vacant after the resignation of Kipchumba Murkomen to take up the Cabinet Secretary post.

President William Ruto nominated Murkomen to be Transport CS. His nomination was approved by the National Assembly, paving way for his appointment.

But with the seat declared vacant by IEBC about a week ago, setting January 5, 2023, as the day for the by-election, UDA has now announced the nomination date.

Meanwhile, a notice on its Twitter handle notes the exercise will be held on November 26, 2022.

The nomination will be held alongside that for individuals seeking to be the next Kandara Member of Parliament.

The seat fell vacant after Alice Wahome resigned to become Water Cabinet Secretary.

Following the declaration of vacancies in the offices of Member of the National Assembly Kandara Constituency, Member of the Senate for Elgeyo Marakwet County and Member of the County Assembly of Shellah Ward, Lamu County, United Democratic Alliance announces the party nominations will be held on November 26, 2022,” UDA National Elections Board (NEB) chairman Eng. Anthony Mwaura announced this in a notice dated November 7, 2022.

UDA stronghold

Elgeyo Marakwet is a UDA stronghold and the winner of the party’s nomination is likely to carry the day in the January mini-poll.

So far, over 30 candidates have expressed interest in the seat.

The party has also announced that the male Senate candidates will be required to part ways with Ksh250,000 as a nomination fee.

Further, females, youth and persons with disabilities will be required to pay Ksh125,000 each to be allowed to participate in the nomination exercise.
