AU Appoints President Ruto the Champion for Institutional Reform

President William Ruto was on Saturday, February 17, 2024, designated the African Union Champion for Institutional Reform.

He takes over the role from President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

The Assembly of the African Union heads of State and Government bestowed on President Ruto the responsibility of providing political leadership and vision and completing the Comprehensive Institutional Reform Initiative that started in 2016.

The reform involves reforming the structure, functioning and focus of the African Union Commission, AU Organs and Specialised Agencies so that they become more effective and efficient in managing the programmes of the African Union.

Following his new role, leaders across the country shared their congratulatory message.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in a message posted on his verified X handle said;

“From Kenya to Africa; from Africa to the World. Congratulations our President, Your Excellency, Dr @WilliamsRuto on your appointment as the African Union Champion for Institutional Reforms. It is an affirmation that you are one of the most forward-looking, focused, visionary and highly transformative leaders on the Continent. Amidst Socio-Politico-Economic challenges of our Continent, in you, Kenya has an opportunity to lead radical reforms to buttress Africa’s desire for prosperity.”
