Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has initiated a street lighting program to promote the growth of a 24-hour economy and enhance night-time traffic safety in Eldoret town and other trading centres.
The County Government’s Energy team continues to install new streetlights.
In the first phase of the program, the team has been installing at least 21 lanterns a day within Eldoret CBD and on major highways.
While on an inspection exercise of the street lighting program in Eldoret town Monday night, Governor Bii said the target is to ensure that Eldoret town is safe for business to thrive, irrespective of the time as it gears up for a 24-hour economy.
“As we prepare for the upcoming Devolution Conference in our county, infrastructural development is underway, and we will ensure that all activities taking place in our town are expedited to accommodate more than 8,000 visitors expected in August for the devolution conference,” Governor Bii said.
In preparation for the Devolution conference, the County government is also set to install 3 high mast lights at the Eldoret Sports Club.
Highly populated informal settlements
Governor Bii further assured residents of Uasin Gishu that his administration is keen to also install street lights and high masts lights in highly populated informal settlement areas, estates and besides, selected areas with high traffic.
“This program is crucial in anticipation of Eldoret town being elevated to a City. My administration is focused on enabling residents to operate their businesses comfortably without challenges of insecurity,” he noted.
In addition, Roads CECM, Eng Joseph Lagat, said his department is supporting the Governor’s plans of ensuring adequate infrastructure projects that promote business while at the same time assisting in security.
Governor Bii was accompanied by different senior government officials during the inspection.
