Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Unveil Upgraded Facilities

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, a leading medical facility in Nairobi, officially launched its upgraded facilities on International Women’s Day, March 8th, 2023.

The event was presided over by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr Nakhumicha S. Wafula, who unveiled the new blood transfusion centre, renal unit, ICU, and playground.

With the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Embrace Equity,” the launch of these upgraded facilities promotes equality and ensures that women have access to the best possible care.

The hospital’s new facilities will serve a significant population in Nairobi and its environs, providing equitable access to healthcare for all.

The collaboration between the Nairobi City County Government and the Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority in upgrading the hospital’s blood collection centre to a full satellite is commendable.

This will serve the eastern side of Nairobi, providing safe and reliable blood transfusions.

The renal unit at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital is also a significant addition, as chronic kidney disease affects four million Kenyans, with only 10% having access to dialysis services.

Meanwhile, the establishment of this unit will ease the burden and waiting period at the National Referral Hospital – KNH.

Furthermore, the addition of the critical care unit at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital is a much-needed venture, as there is a shortage of ICU beds and ventilators across both public and private hospitals in Kenya.

The playground will serve as an area for children to engage in recreational activities, improving their psychological well-being, especially for children suffering from chronic illnesses like cancer, TB, and kidney diseases.

The partnership between the Ministry of Health and the Nairobi City County Government has led to the provision of modern equipment and facilities, improved access to healthcare, cost-effective healthcare, enhanced capacity of MLKH facilities, and improved infrastructure.

Further, the launch of the upgraded Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital facilities is a significant milestone in efforts to improve healthcare and quality of life for all citizens.
