Police officers in Nandi County have arrested two students suspected to be behind an attack on a teacher at Maraba Secondary School.
The arrest follows an attack on the teacher identified as Malakwen Kosgei by students after what is said he asked them to queue during a mealtime.
Police say those arrested are form four students at the school.
It is said the two attacked the teacher on Friday night using blunt objects that left his hand fractured.
Initial reports indicate that the two students developed bad blood with the teacher after he asked them to queue, and waylaid the teacher and assaulted him as he was heading home.
After the attack, the teacher reported the matter to the Kobujoi police station.
The incident caused an uproar among teachers in Nandi County, with fear that their safety was at risk.
Teachers from Nandi South staged a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday to condemn the action and demand the culprits be arrested.
The teachers, led by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) Nandi South Executive Secretary Paul Rotich, also matched to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) seeking transfer from Maraba Secondary School over the incident.
“Teachers are not lesser humans, if a student was canned by a teacher, action would have been swift. Now a teacher is assaulted and suffered a broken arm, and the students are suspended,” Rotich said.
Nandi County Director of Education Zachariah Muituri however assured that the incident will be investigated and those involved arrested and charged.
“The matter is being investigated by the ministry and police. The teacher sought medical attention at a local hospital after the assault,” Muituri said.
The teacher has already been issued with a P3 form to record the assault as evidence that a violent act had occurred.
Suspects are being held at the Kobujoi Police station awaiting to be arraigned in court.
