Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, received the Taskforce Report on Fluorspar Mining Company.
The report is a culmination of a public engagement process where the 15-member team spent time taking views and recommendations from local residents.
Speaking while receiving the report, Rotich said, “I would like to commend the Joseph Kandie-led team for a well-done job and thank them for coming up with a comprehensive report which recommends the reopening of the mining company among other issues touching on compensation.”

He further noted that he will be forwarding the report to Mining Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya in the coming few days for necessary action.
“I would like to assure the people of Kimwarer that all their concerns will be considered. I am confident that the Mining Company which used to employ thousands of people both directly and indirectly will roar back to life soon,” added Rotich.
Present during the event was Soy North Member of County Assembly (MCA) Simon Chepseba and his Soy South counterpart Jonah Tanui who were members of the task force.
Others were Sammy Chebii, Joseph Koech, Kibor Samoei, Jacob Torut and Joyce Kiplimo.

The task force was set up on September 12, 2022.
It was also tasked to collect views from members of the public as part of the governor’s plan to revive the company that provided direct and indirect jobs to hundreds of locals.
At its best, Fluorspar Company employed 2,000 persons.
