NPS Tells Off Uasin Gishu Politicians Over Transfer Of Police Officers

The National Police Service (NPS) has come out to dismiss threats made by a section of politicians against police officers.

NPS in a statement on January 8, 2023, insisted that it was independent and that matters transfer and dismissal of police officers is their exclusive constitutional mandate.

The statement come just a day after Uasin Gishu County Woman Member of Parliament Gladys Boss Shollei threatened to transfer all senior police officers in Ainabkoi Sub County.

Addressing locals at Naiberi Centre, Shollei who is also the National Assembly Deputy Speaker said laxity of the officers was the reason behind a wave of Insecurity in the area.

But in a statement, NPS noted that any threats to transfer or sack police officers made by politicians were null and void.

It has come to the attention of the Inspector General, National Police Service, that there are politicians addressing members of public while claiming that they are going to transfer or dismiss some Police Officers. Such utterances are null and void,” read part of the statement posted on the NPS Facebook page.

Cause disaffection

Further, the body that is mandated to handle administrative issues of police officers asked political leaders to refrain from making public utterances it said would likely to cause disaffection within the National Police Service.

It also noted that the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome had directed all Police Commanders to continue discharging their official duties professionally without favor or fear of intimidation.

There has been concerns over rising insecurity in several parts of Uasin Gishu County with political leaders demanding for action.

On Friday, a section of Naiberi traders and locals staged a protest over the same.

But while the National Assembly Deputy Speaker threatened to transfer officers from the areas facing insecurity, Kesses Member of Parliament CPA Julius Ruto said they would engage with relevant individuals for the matter to be addressed with the urgency it deserves.

The cases of insecurity is rising at alarming rate in Uasin Gishu County, We will be engaging the relavant bodies tasked with providing security to our people to end this.This MUST STOP na sio TAFADHALI!,” the MP posted on his Facebook page.
