Members of the Trans Nzoia County Assembly have passed an impeachment motion against three senior county officials.
A majority of the MCAs voted in support of the motion that sought to compel Governor George Natembeya to sack the County Secretary Truphosa Amere and County Executives Janerose Mutama (Lands) and Stanly Kirui (Sports, Gender, Tourism and Culture).
Nabiswa ward MCA Martin Jamanur tabled a motion against Kirui, while Mutama’s was tabled by Deputy Speaker/Matisi ward MCA Obed Mwale.
Cherang’any/Suwerwa MCA Edwin Koech tabled an impeachment motion against the County Secretary.
19 MCAs voted to support the motion while 13 others walked out, citing existing court orders barring them from debating it.
The two CECMs had secured conservatory orders blocking the MCAs from proceeding with the impeachment motion.
They are accused of among others abuse of office, a gross violation of the Constitution and other Laws, and incompetence.
The MCAs voted to impeach the county officials barely a day after Governor Natembeya asked them to drop the plans.
Speaking during the launch of the assembly’s 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, Natembeya said the three county executives deserve a second chance.
“While you exercise your quasi-judicial powers, let justice be the shield and defender. Let us look at these people not just as officers but as people who have people who are looking up to them and everybody in life deserves a second chance,” the county boss urged.
