Why Reuben Kigame Wants IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati to Resign

Presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame is now calling on IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati to resign.

Kigame, in a media briefing at his home in Eldoret town, said Chebukati is unfit to hold the office, based on the manner in which he handled the clearance of individuals that had expressed interest to vie for the country’s top seat in the August 9, 2022, general election.

The renowned gospel musician noted that Chebukati’s actions to lock many of the aspirants out of the presidential race was more of a personality problem.

When I see Wafula Chebukati, a lawyer of the level of the Supreme Court Judge abusing the law, it is not just state capture but a problem of personality,” Kigame said.

He is impersonal, unfriendly, hostile and everything except a returning officer,” he added.

Kigame who is seeking to vie for the presidency on an independent ticket claimed that IEBC and the state had a predetermined number of presidential candidates it wanted to be cleared.

He warned that should the current state of affairs at the electoral body remain unaddressed, it would set a basis for the nullification of the upcoming general election.

Same standards required of us were not required of anybody else. Some have issues with their degrees, others have nationality questions, and I don’t know how many would pass the EACC test,” said the gospel musician who has already filed a case before the High Court, challenging IEBC’s decision to lock him out of the presidential race.

The court is set to rule on his case next week, and he is optimistic that he will be allowed to be on the ballot.

He is also expected to officially unveil his manifesto on Thursday, July 7, 2022.

Kigame, in a recent post on his official Twitter handle, said he would launch his manifesto irrespective of whether he would be on the ballot or not.

Whether on the ballot or not, on Thursday this wk I will launch my presidential manifesto for a better Kenya that operates on Utu, Maadili na Maendeleo. There is a different and faster way to achieve the Kenya we want,” he said in a tweet dated July 4, 2022.
