Elgeyo Marakwet: Iten County and Referral Hospital Eye Unit to Get a Theatre

Construction of a theatre at the Iten County and Referral Hospital’s Eye Unit is set to begin.

The eye unit which is now operational is a partnership project of Elgeyo Marakwet County and Operation Eyesight Universal.

While Operation Eyesight Universal funded the first phase of the project which hosts an outpatient unit, the County will construct the inpatient section which will include the wards.

Operation Eyesight Universal is an international development organization working to eliminate avoidable blindness and restore eyesight in developing countries.

Alice Mwangi, Country Manager – Kenya Operation Eyesight Universal said the construction works are set to begin in the next three weeks. It is expected to be completed in three months’ time.

We are keen to reduce the rising cases of eye infections which lead to blindness. We have joined hands with the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet which has seen several people with eye problems attended here,” Mwangi said.

In 2011, Operation Eyesight Universal began supporting the delivery of quality eye care services in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

Further, the hospital received its first eye diagnostic equipment, including an ophthalmoscope, retinoscope, trial box, slit lamp and operating microscope.

Present was Health Administration CO Josephat Maiyo and ICRH Medical Superintendent Benjamin Kimaile among other County Staff.
