‘The Blind Go Green’ Initiative Launched as Calls to Plant Trees Intensify

Jenga Mkenya Movement leader Reuben Kigame has asked Kenyans to heed to calls by the government to plant more trees.

Speaking on Saturday when he presided over the launch of ‘The Blind Go Green’ Initiative, Kigame hailed President William Ruto’s plan to make Kenya a green economy.

The plan is contained in the ‘Greening Initiative’ in which the government is targeting to grow and sustain a Green economy by planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

During the event held in Nairobi, the Jenga Mkenya Movement leader planted several trees in the Kenya Society for the Blind compound.

The event was also attended by former Marakwet West Member of Parliament Linah Chebii Kilimo, the Executive Director of Kenya Society For the Blind Samson Waweru and a representative from The County Government of Nairobi.

The chairman of welfare, Jenga Mkenya Movement, Gitonga Fredrick was also present.

Visually Impaired

Planting of the trees was to mark the launch of “The Blind Go Green” Initiative.

It coincided with the world marked Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on the 22nd of April.

“The Blind Go Green” is an environmental conservation and climate change mitigation initiative for the visually impaired in Kenya.

The initiative has been launched barely a week after the Ministry of Education also rollout out a program that will see Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions also join hands in tree planting.

Dubbed ‘Greening TVETs, the initiative is targeting to plant at least 5 million trees within the institutions this year and at least a billion within five years.

There has been calls for Kenyans to plant trees as part of the efforts to increase forest cover which is currently below 10 percent.

Planting of trees have also been named as a mitigation to climate change effects.
